Tuesday, 28th week in Ordinary Time

Paul urges believers to live in the freedom Christ won, letting love, not the letter of the law, be their guide. The Psalmist finds delight and life in God’s commandments, while Jesus rebukes outward ritual without inner purity, calling for the Spirit’s work within. Together the readings invite a faith that is alive, loving, and Spirit‑filled.

“The Apostle Paul reminds us that Christian freedom is not a license for self‑indulgence but a call to serve one another in love. When we understand that true righteousness comes from faith working through love, the endless checklist of external observances loses its power over us. The Psalmist’s response to God’s law is a model for us today: He does not see the commandments as burdens but as the source of delight and the pathway to a life filled with God’s graciousness. In a world that often measures devotion by visible actions, this interior joy challenges us to cherish God’s word for its own sake. Jesus’ encounter with the Pharisees underscores the danger of focusing on outward cleanliness while neglecting the heart’s condition. He likens the generation to a cup and a dish covered with a thick crust of dead things—rituals that look polished but are spiritually stagnant. The true “gift of the Spirit” transforms the whole person, making external rites unnecessary for genuine holiness. Today, we are invited to let the Spirit dissolve the crust of dead habits in our lives. By embracing freedom, delighting in God’s law, and allowing the Spirit to renew our inner being, we become vessels that reflect Christ’s love to the world.”

Daily Challenge

Spend at least fifteen minutes this day in quiet prayer, reading a short passage of Scripture (perhaps one of the verses from today’s readings) and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any "crust" of dead habits in your life that need renewal. Then, perform one concrete act of love for someone else, viewing it as a living expression of that freedom.

Today's Prayer

“Lord Jesus, grant us the grace to live in the freedom you have won, serving one another with sincere love. Fill our hearts with the Spirit so that the words of Scripture become our delight and guide, not merely outward rites. May we be vessels of your living water, clean inside and out. Amen.”
